Luigi Ferrario graduated as architect from the Polytechnic of Turin and received a master’s degree in environmental and architectural restoration from the University of Rome. At the age of 25, he was in charge of the architectural section of the Centre d’Experimentation Artistique Marie Louise Jeanneret in Boissano; one year later, he opened the professional studio and gallery of modern and contemporary architecture ‘Laboratorio Architettura Contemporanea’ in Rome, with the inaugural exhibition “Dopo l’architettura post-moderna”.
In 1983 he curated the exhibition “Terragni-Poesia della Razionalità” in Rome, in 1984 the exhibition “Riccardo Gualino- Architetture da collezione” in Milan and in 1985 the exhibition “Figini e Pollini: Architettura per il Movimento Moderno” in Rome again. In 1989 he moved his studio to Milan. In January 1999 Skira published a book on his work entitled “Mies and Me”. Several of his projects have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and at the Parma Architectural Festival. He was awarded with an honorable mention on the occasion of “Gold Medal for Italian Architecture” at the Triennale design Museum in Milan, in 2003. The restoration of the Legnano’s Castle was selected as one of the Italian works for the “European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2009″.
In 2010 a floating prototype of the Aluminium House was presented in the Culture Nature for the 12th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. In September 2010 Silvana Editoriale published a book on his projects entitled “Paesaggi costruiti”. He designed and realized many architectural projects involving urban and monumental restorations, as well as projects of interior architecture and design in Italy and abroad. A keen attention for technical details and an acute sensitivity for the setting of each project, whether natural or constructed, characterize the uniqueness of this work. Renovation and innovation, historical places and Modern Movement’s memories are interwoven in Ferrario’s works, converging in his interpretation of the present through a rational approach linked to the great 20th century masters – Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Alberto Sartoris above all.
